The Grief Of The Beautiful Flower

Published By

on

I once stopped to admire a beautiful flower in its full blossom. Rather than savour the beauty of the present alone, my mind went ahead to the future which, as a matter of fact, was not so attractive. The future of the beautiful flower involved a loss and a marriage with dust. What a sorrowful loss and marriage it would be.

In a sense it was real, that a story of loss would be told one day about the attractive flower that stood before me. It could be that the flower had lost its luxuriant colour  and dried off due to the scorching heat of the sun or the selfishness of its admirers. It could also be that the flower had become one with the mother earth and disappeared with a mournful marriage.

The future story of the flower, as frightening and grief – laden as it appeared, is more of my story than of the flower. My future losses are captured in the scene to make me rely on God rather than on the passing things of this life. So the real beauty of the flower lies in its fragile nature; that it blooms and fades, shoots out and falls, and that it sometimes dies in the hand of its admirers who pluck it when it is most attractive. In the same manner,  my life will end one day when it is perhaps most needed, least expected or even grossly neglected by others. Yet even at that moment of dust to dust, the real beauty of our life stands out amidst the corruptibles of this life; for as Jesus Christ said, unless a wheat grain falls into the earth and dies, it remains only a single grain; but if it dies, it yields a rich harvest. (Jn. 12:24)

    Thanks for sharing Padre
It’s so beautiful to know that such a loss is good and necessary for growth. There’s always meaning in pain and suffering even in dying Victor Frankl would add.
The challenging thing is to discover it.
