The Lonely Bird MS/2018/12

Published By

The beginning of my life was in a nest where I knew parental warmth and care. I was wet when the egg shell cracked open to allow me the vision of an intimidating world, but a parent bird dried me with its warmth. Initially I closed my eyes to my gigantic nest world, but gradually the parent bird, with wide opened eyes encouraged me, the lonely bird, to face the strange world.  It also led me outside the nest and exposed me to the unimaginable possibilities of the real world. The love of the parent bird surprised me. In a mysterious and loving way, it countered my lonely experience. I knew not how the nest came about, but it was there for me. The parent bird hunted my food, and when my wings grew strong, taught me how to fly. I cherished its companion and built my dependence on it as if it would never end.

Suddenly, there was a change I could not easily understand, an emergence of a “love” that seemed unpleasant to me. I was left to hunt my food, often times tossed about by wind as I flew past farms and fields. The parent bird exposed me to all forms of dangers and pains. In the nest, it pecked me so often as if telling me to leave the nest I did not build. When I could not bear it anymore, I flew away and perched at a near by tree where I was beaten by rain . As in Hezekiah’s post recovery song, I recounted my bitterness and anxiety, I moaned like a dove. (Is. 38:9-14)

Then as a lonely bird, I began to understand a new dimension of love. Soaked on the branch of the tree where I perched, I realized that I have to be myself, build my nest and hunt my food. So, even in my loneliness I am still loved. It was a real hard teaching from the parent bird.
