Jonah’s Tree 🌲. MS/2019/05

A school boy was captivated by the story of Jonah (Jonah 4:4-11) as was told by his class teacher. In a moral lesson, the teacher has dramatically explained how a tree sprouted, grew and shaded Jonah when he was tormented by the scorching heat of the sun. Jonah’s tree is, therefore, a symbol of God’s readiness to harken to the needs of his people.

On reaching home, then, the boy wanted to test the veracity of what his teacher had taught so convincingly in the class. So he hurriedly ran to the parish chapel near to their house and prayed. “Oh God, you enjoined me to obey my parents and teachers. Today I was taught how you helped Jonah by raising a tree overnight to shield him from the inclement weather. May it please you, God, to raise Jonah’s tree over my sick brother, Amen, Amen”. Then he rose up and went home hopeful that his prayer would be answered.

In deed his prayer was answered for his brother recovered from his sickness that same day. The miraculous healing brought great excitement and joy in the family but it was short-lived. It was just a day after, his brother was confined to the sick bed again to the surprise of everybody in the family.

This time the boy hurried back to the parish chapel. He muttered some words of prayer to God with deep pain and disappointment. “You know that I feel very angry with you, God; my brother has fallen sick again”. This time God spoke to him; “my friend, you asked for Jonah’s tree, and that you received,go and read your Bible well. Jonah’s tree was attacked by worms just after one day of shading Jonah’s head”. Still kneeling down, the boy extended his hands in prayer. “Please take back Jonah’s tree and give me my own tree which will guarantee the lasting healing of my brother”.
