If I Had Wings. MS/2019/06

Published By

“I wish I had wings, like a dove, I would fly away and find rest” (PS.55:6). I once dreamt like the Psalmist when I saw a multi-coloured bird 🐦 flying in the sky with so much ease. It was as if it soared happily in the sky free from all adversities. In a sense, the bird escaped from the terrestrial challenges of hills and valleys where many other animals are bound to live by nature.

So from this uneven terrestrial habitat, the bird flew away to the boundless sky of freedom and joy. Then as I watched, the beautiful bird hopped from one frond to another on the soaring palm tree standing nearby. From that intimidating height, it gazed down at me as if in sympathy. The whole senario fed my dream and I heard a voice that echoed from within,”I wish I had wings”.

On yet another day, I beheld another bird, this time ugly and unfortunate. It was tossed about by a mighty wind. The ugly bird struggled to fly skyward away from it’s terrestrial enemies. But it was a failed attempt. The gust of wind overpowered the bird, weakened its effort and stalled its flight. Against its instinctual desire to fly, the ugly bird was helplessly navigated to the ground.

Only then was I scared of the life of birds which I have for long idealized as stress-free. I learnt, at that moment, that birds, sometimes, suffer mishap as other animals. At this, my dream, “I wish I had wings”, came to a halt.

Similarly, all human profossions have their attractions and harzads. Some of them are actually wrongly exalted or despised because of our lopsided consideration. May be for the simple fact that the fascinating or unfortunate bird of that profession has remained hidden. Human life is characterized by continuous struggle in all its stages. This can be better understood in the context of St Peter’s counsel in his first epistle; ” Your brothers all over the world are suffering the same thing” (1Pet.5:9), hence,be firm. “What I can achieve with what I have” may be a better dream than ” if I had wings”.
