Celebrating The Mustard Children: The 2019 HCA Day. MS/2019/17

It was a celebration galore at St Joseph’s Catholic Church Ekwulobia, the regional center of Ekwulobia Catholic Region. The day, Saturday 13th July, 2019, was really special. The catholic bishop of Awka diocese, Most Rev. Paulinus Chukwuemeka Ezeokafor and the bishop emeritus of Ahiara diocese, Most Rev. Peter Ebere Okpaleke celebrated with the mustard children of Awka diocese in grand style.

Children turned out in large numbers from the twenty three deaneries of the diocese to join in the celebration. And for these children, it was a memorable event. One of the children confessed happily, “I touched the bishop”.

By their age and physical appearance, they are really the mustard seed that should be sowed in the diocesan farm. On the face value, their contributions to the society seem insignificant. The care given to them  looks exaggerated and wasteful.

But this is exactly what happens when the farmer sows his grains. The lazy or uninformed onlooker jugdes the farmer as wasting his grains, time and energy. But this is a judgment in error, which superficially considers today without reference to the past and future.

The future of the Church and the society at large lies with children. They really deserve enormous attention so as to develop their latent potentials for the Church and society. In the provision of this needed attention, the diocesan bishop is exemplary, so also his corroborators:

The auxiliary bishop, Most Rev. Jonas Benson Okoye. The PMS director, Rev Fr. To bias Osigwe. The HCA coordinator, Sr. Makuochukwu Okafor. The assistant HCA coordinator, Rev. Fr. Kenneth Amakeze.  The devoted animators in all the parishes within the diocese.

May God continue to strengthen you as you sow and tend the mustard children in his vineyard.
